Barack Obama and the Economy

Electing Barack Obama has had a ridiculous impact on our economy.  The day after he was elected, shirts were on sale.  Will.I.am released his new song, “It’s a New Day” mere hours after we knew.  Books are already being published and I plan on writing one myself.  But, I’m going to cover what he actually does first and then publish my book in four or eight years.  You know, once he has actually made an impact.

At first, I thought it was all too much.  I had actually written a paragraph or two in my own book when I heard one was already being published.  I thought first to just forget the notion of writing it and I still might.  Well, I’ll write it in case it’s going to be a good one.  But, I’ll consider whether or not to publish it later.  Because one thing I am not is a writer who jumps on a story for its economic value.  I want all of my books to stand and deliver a good story.  Economics comes later.

My thoughts about it all being too much soon faded when the reality of the situation hit me.  I, like everyone else hadn’t quite felt the actual impact yet.  It’s like winning the lottery and not knowing how you actually feel about it.  It takes time for some things to set in before the actual impact kicks you in the butt one day while you’re making a cup of coffee or shaving in the mirror.  Then, you either wind up cleaning your spilled coffee or start placing pieces of toilet paper all over your face.  That’s the day you realize, “You know what?  Yes I can.”

So, I really think everyone should be getting a piece of history.  This is one of those things my grandparents used to tell me all the time when they would buy me a Tonka Toy or a G.I. Joe.  “Don’t open it up!  It’s going to be worth money some day.”

Are you kidding me?  I can’t open it.  That’s B.S.  This Tonka Toy is going to be thrown off the top of my tower with G.I. Joe inside strapped to a homemade parachute made out of string and plastic trash bags.  Oh, did I mention that I was going to light a firecracker and watch it all explode?  Don’t open it?  Why buy it for me if you didn’t want me to open it?

Anyway, I’m a little older now and I see what they’re saying.  Of course, if you came to my house now with a Tonka Toy and G.I. Joe, I’d probably still do it.  That’s the kid in me.  But the Obama merchandise is something to invest in and keep because in the words of my grandparents, it will be worth something some day.  And for many of you, it will still be hard to get rid of it even then.

This is a time that means so much to many of us.  Get a piece of history!
