The Power of a Lemonade Stand: The Alex Scott Story
A powerful story that brought me to tears, Alex Scott was a young lady who fought for children with cancer. After being diagnosed herself, one of the first things she thought of was how to help other children with the same infliction.
I find it phenomenal when someone who has their own huge problems to deal with invests herself into the well-being of others. In order to care for children with cancer, she thought of selling lemonade at a lemonade stand to raise money for the hospital.
She did not create the quote, but she added new meaning to the words when she said, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” The first year she tried, she raised $2,000 and true to her word, she gave that money to “her hospital.”
It became a yearly event and each year, Alex got more and more optimistic. In 2004, her vision was to raise a million dollars. Tired and weary from the pain of her own illness, she toured The Oprah Show as well as Today to spread her message and get as many people as she could involved. She passed away later that year knowing that she had indeed accomplished what she set out to do.
“If other people help me, I think I can do it.” To this day, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over fifty-five million dollars. “Fighting Childhood Cancer, One Cup At A Time.”
You can get involved! If you would like to help raise more money for children with cancer, visit Alex’s Lemonade Stand and donate or run a lemonade stand of your own.
