Thoughts and Reconsideration
Thoughts and Reconsideration is a journey in poetry through such emotions as love and hate as well as walks in life such as philosophy and spirituality. At first, Michael Allen seems to admit that he knows very little about love, “If fools can eat and drink from the rich man’s table every once in awhile, maybe one day the eyes of fate will blink and we’ll get away with something we were denied before we were born.” But then through works such as “In Memory of an Angel” and “My Broken Piano,” you learn of his journey and why he often feels that way about his experiences with love.
You soon find his views on hatred less harsh than those on love. As he walks you through “Winter is a Lady” and “Spineless, Mindless” as well as the infamous lyrical “A Danger to Society,” you get the idea that hatred is pin-pointedly targeted and very capable of being healed. While love can burn and make life wither in its passion, hatred can often cool at one touch, one connection, one understanding.
This battle ensues throughout the rest of the book as Michael Allen introduces philosophy and spirituality. His thoughts on what he has termed “Spiraling” explain the phenomenon of growth and the notion of contradiction. Declaring, “…it takes time to listen to someone,” Michael Allen acknowledges that it took him years to put his poems together and the thought process he experienced throughout that journey only demonstrates a life of invaluable seasoning.
His poems will touch you, but that is refreshing. There is also elaborate humor, thought provocation and uplifting passages that round out a perfectly coordinated poetic experience in the hands of a lyrical narrator. From “Another World” to “My Awakening,” Michael Allen’s styles vary as well his voice, leaving interpretation up to your wildest imagination.
